First Book Club: ‘Fathoms’ (with Rebecca Giggs)
‘I suddenly realised that all these environmental problems—consumer culture, plastic pollution, animal welfare—they all came together inside the whale.’
Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction with the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For June that debut is Rebecca Giggs’ Fathoms: the world in the whale, out now from Scribe Publications. Rebecca Giggs joins Ellen Cregan to discuss how people feel toward animals in a time of ecological crisis and technological change, and how Fathoms blends natural history, philosophy, and science to explore the lives of whales and our relationship to them.
Our July First Book Club title will be A Lonely Girl is a Dangerous Thing by Jessie Tu (Allen & Unwin). Our theme song is Broke for Free’s ‘Something Elated’.
