The 2024 KYD School Writing Prize invited entries from secondary school students that explore the idea of ‘connection’ through fiction or non-fiction. Students from across the country entered ambitious stories and essays that widely and creatively captured this year’s theme.

We’re thrilled to announce Imii Lang (Year 12, Princes Hill Secondary College, VIC) as the winner of this year’s prize! Imii receives a $500 cash prize, publication in KYD and an invitation to perform her work at the Wheeler Centre.

Imii’s fictional piece ‘Melting’ is a moving and poignant short story which describes a wedding ceremony from the perspective of a melting ice swan sculpture. During its final hours the sculpture contemplates the longevity and privilege of the human lives and connections it observes.
