In partnership with State Library of Queensland’s black&write! Project, we’re thrilled to announce Allanah Hunt as KYD’s First Nations Editor-in-Residence in 2021. Allanah will commission, edit and publish original pieces alongside KYD’s regular publishing program on an ongoing basis. Allanah joins KYD to build on the fantastic work of Jasmin McGaughey, who has been commissioning and editing original pieces for KYD since early 2020.
State Library of Queensland’s black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing project supports the development of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander writers from across Australia. This publishing partnership with KYD enables our organisations to offer pathways to publication for First Nations writers, to advance the careers of emerging First Nations editors, and to foster the creation of new works in a culturally safe setting.
First Nations Editor-in-Residence Allanah Hunt:
Hi everyone! My name is Allanah Hunt and I’m a Barkindji woman now residing in Brisbane, Queensland. I’m a Junior Editor at black&write! at the State Library of Queensland and very excited to be a First Nations Editor-in-Residence with Kill Your Darlings. I can’t wait to read your submissions! I’d be really keen to see any works on subjects around how First Nations creatively talk back to institutional racism and content that negatively portrays us, the different genres First Nations writers use to share their words, the experiences of First Nations people in academia and First Nations incarceration. However, that said, I would love to see any and all ideas by First Nations writers. All of your voices and stories are unique so I would love to hear them in whatever subject you would like to share them!
KYD Editor Alan Vaarwerk:
I’m delighted to welcome Allanah Hunt to the KYD team as our 2021 First Nations Editor-in-Residence. I’ve long been a big fan of Allanah’s short fiction, so I’m thrilled that she’ll be bringing this expertise and care to the work of emerging First Nations writers and the KYD publishing program. KYD and black&write! are committed to counteracting the biases and imbalances in Australian publishing, and we’re so pleased to be able to continue this successful partnership benefiting First Nations writers, editors and the broader writing community.
All KYD contributors are paid. First Nations writers can find more information on how to submit to work with Allanah here.
