The KYD School Writing Prize is back for 2020! The prize is designed to develop, mentor, edit and publish the work of writers from Australian secondary schools.
We launched the KYD School Writing Prize in 2019 because we wanted to hear more from young people about the issues that concern them. The quality of the entries to last year’s award was very high, with students from across the country ambitiously tackling subjects ranging from migration and refugees, to mental health, to sexism and misogyny, to environmental destruction and voluntary assisted dying.
The winners of the 2019 KYD School Writing Prize were Bryce Groves (non-fiction) and Faye Velasquez (fiction).
Once again we’re seeking entries of up to 1500 words (fiction or non-fiction), with students responding to a current social or political issue.In today’s world we think it’s more urgent than ever to hear from teenagers about the social and political issues that shape their lives and futures. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize, editorial support and publication in KYD, with five other students highly commended.
Please note this year’s prize was delayed due to the disruption to schools caused by COVID-19. Entries will now open on 13 July and close on 4 September.
This year’s award will be judged by award-winning author Alice Pung and KYD editor Alan Vaarwerk.
