acwa_logoKill Your Darlings is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2015 S.D. Harvey Short Story Award, which was announced on Saturday 8th August at the Byron Bay Writers Festival by Australian Crime Writers Association (ACWA) President Michael Robotham. The shortlisted authors are:

  • ‘A watched pot’ by Aoife Clifford (VIC)
  • ‘Short term people’ by Andrea Gillum (VIC)
  • ‘Prisoner’s dilemma’ by Stephen Gray (VIC)
  • ‘Sweetie’ by Grace Heyer (NSW)
  • ‘Daddy played the trumpet’ by Adriane Howell (VIC)
  • ‘Roux’s sister’ by Darcy-Lee Tindale (NSW)

Congratulations to all these writers on their shortlisted stories.

In a wonderfully fruitful initiative, ACWA and Kill Your Darlings have partnered to present the 2015 S.D. Harvey Short Story Award. Submissions increased by 1200 per cent on the previous year’s award, which of course meant that there was a greater range in the quality and the breadth of the work. The initial longlist of 17 stories reflected the creativity and variety that the crime genre inspires. In the end, the content and quality of the final six pieces in the shortlist are of the highest standard. The winning entry will be published in the October issue of KYD.

Some of the comments the judges made about the pieces on the shortlist were:

I think it is just so beautifully written and observed.

I found the story carried me away and thought place was particularly well done as well as character and macabre ending.

The ending really did make you gasp.

The winning story will be announced at the 2015 Ned Kelly Awards, which return to Melbourne on Saturday August 22 at the Bella Union Bar, Trades Hall as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival. RSVP on Facebook here.

Kill Your Darlings looks forward to continuing its partnership with ACWA and this fantastic and unique genre writing prize, with the hope that the S.D. Harvey award will continue to inspire crime writers across Australia.
