Journalism 101 with Bhakthi Puvanenthiran (Melbourne)
Join ABC Life editor Bhakthi Puvanenthiran in this unique writing workshop all about the fundamentals of great reporting.
Every compelling piece of journalism is built on several layers of decision making and hard yakka: from sniffing out a story, choosing a format, getting on the record statements, crafting a ‘hook’ or an ‘angle’ and getting the best placement for your work.
Whether you’re expanding your freelance portfolio into reporting or you’re curious to see if journalism is for you, we will explore what editors are looking for and the nitty gritty of news gathering and working a story up to final presentation. Through a series of exercises we will nurture your ability to pitch, write a lede, write a headline, fact check, infuse your voice in your work, tailor work to your chosen audience, choose and work with talent or sources to earn trust, structure your story, understand news values and avoid defamation and other legal issues.
