Deputy Editor, Kill Your Darlings magazine

KYD is looking for a deputy editor to join our small but expanding publishing team from January 2021. This is a part-time (1 day a week) paid role based in our Melbourne office.

This newly created role requires you to work on a range of editorial projects, including but not limited to magazine content, our New Australian Fiction anthology and other writing initiatives. You will be responsible for structural editing, copy-editing and proofing across a variety of genres. You will have excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation, a fine attention to detail, proficiency editing onscreen in Microsoft Word, confidence in learning new systems and procedures, and the capacity to communicate effectively, work both independently and collaboratively, and manage schedules. An interest in literary reviews is preferred.

We’re looking for someone with previous relevant editorial experience—either working in-house, freelancing, interning or volunteering. Postgraduate qualifications in editing and publishing is not a requirement. You will, however, need to have a solid understanding of Australian literary magazines. You’ll also need to be highly organised, professional, friendly and level-headed.

We strongly encourage emerging editors from diverse and/or marginalised backgrounds to apply for this position.

The role is based in our Melbourne office, but some flexibility about remote working is possible if COVID-19 restrictions remain in place into early 2021. The candidate, however, must still be based in Melbourne for other duties.

To apply, please submit your CV and a 1-page cover letter explaining your suitability for this position to [email protected], with ‘Deputy Editor’ in the subject line. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions. Applications close on Friday, 30 October 2020 at 5pm AEDT.
