If you’re a budding essayist or an aspiring thriller writer, our upcoming workshops in Melbourne are for you! In October and November guest tutors Sophie Cunningham and J.P. Pomare will present exciting new writing workshops for Kill Your Darlings. If you’re outside of Melbourne, don’t worry – these same workshops will be made available online later this year. KYD‘s Writers’ Workshops are suitable for writers of all levels.

Writing Creative Non-Fiction Essays with Sophie Cunningham
Saturday 19 October, 10am-4pm
Brunswick Room, 75 Reid Street, Fitzroy North

All non-fiction is creative — a writer must isolate particular details from a plethora of detail, and elucidate broad and complex subjects. But how can we find an emotional connection to the facts, for both the writer and the reader?

This workshop aims to help you experiment with form and structure and communicate stories in a discursive and engaged way. You’re encouraged to come equipped with a particular issue you’d like to explore so you can begin the job of drafting your essay – all with an experienced writer and publisher.

Writing A Thriller with J.P. Pomare
Saturday 16 November, 10.30am-4.30pm
Multipurpose Room 2, Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre, Carlton

Thrillers require all the elements of great fiction – complex characters, snappy dialogue and well crafted prose – but writers must have a focus on plot and structure to keep readers engaged.

Through a series of writing exercises and insights into the genre, this workshop will teach you how to complete and redraft a thriller manuscript with an eye for publication. Using examples from bestsellers in the genre, this workshop will take a forensic view of structural elements (including POV, setting, and narrative structure) as well as plot to examine how these elements work together to set up big twists and keep the reader hooked until the last page.

These workshops have limited places available, so book now to secure your spot!

Don’t forget: all KYD members receive a 10% discount on our writing workshops. Become a member today from just $17.50!
