Kill Your Darlings is looking for a Contributing Editor to join our team in 2016. The Contributing Editor will write entertaining, informed and insightful articles for both print and online, focusing on one particular area of interest.
What does the role entail?
The Contributing Editor will write across both the print and online editions of Kill Your Darlings, and will be an integral part of the KYD team. They will have a strong interest in and knowledge of one particular cultural field, writing polished, informed and accessible content.
Potential Contributing Editor categories we’d love to see include (but are not limited to) politics, society, film and TV, books and writing, pop culture, gaming and technology, music, sport, and art.
The Contributing Editor will publish a total of 12 articles in Kill Your Darlings during 2016, including:
- 10x monthly online articles of approx. 1000 words
- 2x articles for the quarterly print issue of the journal, min. 2000 words
The total annual payment package for the Contributing Editor is $3000.
The Contributing Editor will be given a degree of editorial independence and expected to consistently submit work of very high standard. Please note, however, that this is not an editorial role per se. Their work will still be edited by the KYD editorial team.

- Section 1: An explanation of your expertise in your proposed category, and description of your knowledge of or involvement with this field (max. 500 words)
- Section 2: Three short outlines (max. 200 words each) for suggested print or online articles about your category
- Section 3: A one-page maximum overview of your relevant previous experience, including writing and editing roles. This may include a link to a maximum of two pieces of published writing you feel represent your tone and voice (these do not necessarily need to be on the same topic as your proposed category)
